Nothing remains but to crouch among the prisoners or fall among the slain. For all this his anger has not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.


And I will stir up Egyptians against Egyptians, and they will fight, each against another and each against his neighbor, city against city, kingdom against kingdom;


There is an outcry in the streets for lack of wine; all joy has grown dark; the gladness of the earth is banished.


“Judah mourns, and her gates languish; her people lament on the ground, and the cry of Jerusalem goes up.


How much you go about, changing your way! You shall be put to shame by Egypt as you were put to shame by Assyria.


“The swift cannot flee away, nor the warrior escape; in the north by the river Euphrates they have stumbled and fallen.


“Thus says the Lord: Behold, waters are rising out of the north, and shall become an overflowing torrent; they shall overflow the land and all that fills it, the city and those who dwell in it. Men shall cry out, and every inhabitant of the land shall wail.


“From the outcry at Heshbon even to Elealeh, as far as Jahaz they utter their voice, from Zoar to Horonaim and Eglath-shelishiyah. For the waters of Nimrim also have become desolate.


At the sound of their fall the earth shall tremble; the sound of their cry shall be heard at the Red Sea.


At the sound of the capture of Babylon the earth shall tremble, and her cry shall be heard among the nations.”


“A voice! A cry from Babylon! The noise of great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans!


He remembers his officers; they stumble as they go, they hasten to the wall; the siege tower is set up.


“On that day,” declares the Lord, “a cry will be heard from the Fish Gate, a wail from the Second Quarter, a loud crash from the hills.


The men who did not die were struck with tumors, and the cry of the city went up to heaven.
