Absalom also sent for Achitophel the Gilonite, David's counsellor, from his city Gilo. And while he was offering sacrifices, there was a strong conspiracy: and the people running together increased with Absalom.

Now the counsel of Achitophel, which he gave in those days, was as if a man should consult God. So was all the counsel of Achitophel, both when he was with David, and when he was with Absalom.

And Absalom, and all the men of Israel said: The counsel of Chusai the Arachite is better than the counsel of Achitophel. And by the will of the Lord the profitable counsel of Achitophel was defeated, that the Lord might bring evil upon Absalom.

But Achitophel, seeing that his counsel was not followed, saddled his ass, and arose and went home to his house and to his city. And putting his house in order hanged himself, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.

But Absalom said: Call Chusai the Arachite; and let us hear what he also saith.

And Chusai said to Absalom: The counsel that Achitophel hath given this time is not good.

With thee is the principality in the day of thy strength: in the brightness of the saints: from the womb before the day star I begot thee.

In the daytime the Lord hath commanded his mercy; and a canticle to him in the night. With me is prayer to the God of my life.

Then shall my enemies be turned back. In what day soever I shall call upon thee, behold I know thou art my God.

In me, O God, are vows to thee, which I will pay, praises to thee:

And the spirit of Egypt shall be broken in the bowels thereof, and I will cast down their counsel: and they shall consult their idols, and their diviners, and their wizards and soothsayers.

That make void the tokens of diviners and make the soothsayers mad: that turn the wise backward, and that: make their knowledge foolish:

I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen. But that the scripture may be fulfilled: He that eateth bread with me, shall lift up his heel against me.

Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this world? Hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

For this is not wisdom, descending from above: but earthly, sensual, devilish.
