And arguing against Moses, they said, "Give us water, so that we may drink." And Moses answered them: "Why argue against me? For what reason do you tempt the Lord?"


And he called the name of that place 'Temptation,' because of the arguing of the sons of Israel, and because they tempted the Lord, saying: "Is the Lord with us, or not?"


Therefore, we now call the arrogant blessed, as if those who work impiety have been built up, and as if they have tempted God and been saved."


Then certain ones from the scribes and the Pharisees responded to him, saying, "Teacher, we want to see a sign from you."


And the Pharisees approached him, testing him, and saying, "Is it lawful for a man to separate from his wife, no matter what the cause?"


And when he had arrived at the temple, as he was teaching, the leaders of the priests and the elders of the people approached him, saying: "By what authority do you do these things? And who has given this authority to you?"


Then the Pharisees, going out, took counsel as to how they might entrap him in speech.


But Jesus, knowing their wickedness, said: "Why do you test me, you hypocrites?


In that day, the Sadducees, who say there is to be no resurrection, approached him. And they questioned him,


And knowing their skill in deception, he said to them: "Why do you test me? Bring me a denarius, so that I may see it."


And the scribes and the Pharisees, seeing that he ate with tax collectors and sinners, said to his disciples, "Why does your Teacher eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?"


And one from the crowd responded by saying: "Teacher, I have brought to you my son, who has a mute spirit.


And behold, a certain expert in the law rose up, testing him and saying, "Teacher, what must I do to possess eternal life?"


And others, testing him, required a sign from heaven of him.


Therefore, Jesus said to him, "Unless you have seen signs and wonders, you do not believe."


And so they said to him: "Then what sign will you do, so that we may see it and believe in you? What will you work?


Have any of the leaders believed in him, or any of the Pharisees?


But they were saying this to test him, so that they might be able to accuse him. Then Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the earth.


And Peter said to her: "Why have you agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they shall carry you out!"


And let us not tempt Christ, as some of them tempted, and so they perished by serpents.


You shall not tempt the Lord your God, as you tempted him in the place of temptation.
