¹ H2320And it came to pass in the monthH5212NisanH6242, in the twentiethH8141yearH783of ArtaxerxesH4428the kingH3196, that wineH6440was beforeH5375him: and I took up[H8799] H3196the wineH5414, and gave[H8799] H4428it unto the kingH7451. Now I had not been beforetime sadH6440in his presence.

² H4428Wherefore the kingH559said[H8799] H6440unto me, Why is thy countenanceH7451sadH2470, seeing thou art not sick[H8802] H7455? this is nothing else but sorrowH3820of heartH3966. Then I was veryH7235sore[H8687] H3372afraid[H8799] ,

³ H559And said[H8799] H4428unto the kingH4428, Let the kingH2421live[H8799] H5769for everH6440: why should not my countenanceH3415be sad[H8799] H5892, when the cityH1004, the placeH1of my fathersH6913' sepulchresH2720, lieth wasteH8179, and the gatesH398thereof are consumed[H8795] H784with fire?

⁴ H4428Then the kingH559said[H8799] H1245unto me, For what dost thou make request[H8764] H6419? So I prayed[H8691] H430to the GodH8064of heaven.

⁵ H559And I said[H8799] H4428unto the kingH2895, If it please[H8804] H4428the kingH5650, and if thy servantH3190have found favour[H8799] H6440in thy sightH7971, that thou wouldest send[H8799] H3063me unto JudahH5892, unto the cityH1of my fathersH6913' sepulchresH1129, that I may build[H8799]  it.

⁶ H4428And the kingH559said[H8799] H7694unto me, (the queenH3427also sitting[H8802] H681by himH4109,) For how long shall thy journeyH7725be? and when wilt thou return[H8799] H3190? So it pleased[H8799] H6440 H4428the kingH7971to send[H8799] H5414me; and I set[H8799] H2165him a time.

⁷ H559Moreover I said[H8799] H4428unto the kingH2895, If it please[H8804] H4428the kingH107, let lettersH5414be given[H8799] H6346me to the governorsH5676beyondH5104the riverH5674, that they may convey me over[H8686] H935till I come[H8799] H3063into Judah;

⁸ H107And a letterH623unto AsaphH8104the keeper[H8802] H4428of the king'sH6508forestH5414, that he may give[H8799] H6086me timberH7136to make beams[H8763] H8179for the gatesH1002of the palaceH1004which appertained to the houseH2346, and for the wallH5892of the cityH1004, and for the houseH935that I shall enter into[H8799] H4428. And the kingH5414granted[H8799] H2896me, according to the goodH3027handH430of my God upon me.

⁹ H935Then I came[H8799] H6346to the governorsH5676beyondH5104the riverH5414, and gave[H8799] H4428them the king'sH107lettersH4428. Now the kingH7971had sent[H8799] H8269captainsH2428of the armyH6571and horsemen with me.

¹⁰ H5571When SanballatH2772the HoroniteH2900, and TobiahH5650the servantH5984, the AmmoniteH8085, heard[H8799] H3415of it, it grieved[H8799] H7451them exceedinglyH1419 H935that there was come[H8804] H120a manH1245to seek[H8763] H2896the welfareH1121of the childrenH3478of Israel.

¹¹ H935So I came[H8799] H3389to JerusalemH7969, and was there threeH3117days.

¹² H6965And I arose[H8799] H3915in the nightH4592, I and someH4592fewH582menH5046with me; neither told[H8689] H120I any manH430what my GodH5414had put[H8802] H3820in my heartH6213to do[H8800] H3389at JerusalemH929: neither was there any beastH929with me, save the beastH7392that I rode upon[H8802] .

¹³ H3318And I went out[H8799] H3915by nightH8179by the gateH1516of the valleyH6440, even beforeH8577the dragonH5869well[H8677] H5886 H830, and to the dungH8179portH7663, and viewed[H8802] [H8675] H7665 [H8799] H2346the wallsH3389of JerusalemH6555, which were broken down[H8803] H8179, and the gatesH398thereof were consumed[H8795] H784with fire.

¹⁴ H5674Then I went on[H8799] H8179to the gateH5869of the fountainH4428, and to the king'sH1295poolH4725: but there was no placeH929for the beastH5674that was under me to pass[H8800] .

¹⁵ H5927Then went I up[H8802] H3915in the nightH5158by the brookH7663, and viewed[H8802] [H8675] H7665 [H8799] H2346the wallH7725, and turned back[H8799] H935, and entered[H8799] H8179by the gateH1516of the valleyH7725, and so returned[H8799] .

¹⁶ H5461And the rulersH3045knew[H8804] H1980not whither I went[H8804] H6213, or what I did[H8802] H3651; neither had I as yetH5046told[H8689] H3064it to the JewsH3548, nor to the priestsH2715, nor to the noblesH5461, nor to the rulersH3499, nor to the restH6213that did[H8802] H4399the work.

¹⁷ H559Then said[H8799] H7200I unto them, Ye see[H8802] H7451the distressH3389that we are in, how JerusalemH2720lieth wasteH8179, and the gatesH3341thereof are burned[H8738] H784with fireH3212: come[H8798] H1129, and let us build up[H8799] H2346the wallH3389of JerusalemH2781, that we be no more a reproach.

¹⁸ H5046Then I told[H8686] H3027them of the handH430of my GodH2896which was goodH4428upon me; as also the king'sH1697wordsH559that he had spoken[H8804] H559unto me. And they said[H8799] H6965, Let us rise up[H8799] H1129and build[H8804] H2388. So they strengthened[H8762] H3027their handsH2896for this good work .

¹⁹ H5571But when SanballatH2772the HoroniteH2900, and TobiahH5650the servantH5984, the AmmoniteH1654, and GeshemH6163the ArabianH8085, heard[H8799] H3932it, they laughed us to scorn[H8686] H959, and despised[H8799] H559us, and said[H8799] H1697, What is this thingH6213that ye do[H8802] H4775? will ye rebel[H8802] H4428against the king?

²⁰ H7725Then answered[H8686] H1697 H559I them, and said[H8799] H430unto them, The GodH8064of heavenH6743, he will prosper[H8686] H5650us; therefore we his servantsH6965will arise[H8799] H1129and build[H8804] H2506: but ye have no portionH6666, nor rightH2146, nor memorialH3389, in Jerusalem.
