Elisha went from that city to Bethel. Elisha was walking up the hill to the city, and some boys were coming down out of the city. They began making fun of Elisha. They said to him, “Go up, you bald headed man! Go up, you bald headed man!”


“My friends laugh at me now.\par They say,\par ‘He prayed to God,\par and he got his answer.\par \{That is why all these bad things\par happened to him.\}’\par


The fathers of those young men\par are too weak to help me.\par They are old and tired—their muscles\par are not hard and strong any more.\par


People who think they are better than me\par insulted me constantly.\par But I did not stop following your teachings.\par


They talk about me in public places.\par The beer drinkers make up songs about me.\par


Every person will be against every other person. Young people will not respect older people. Common people will not respect the important people.”


Some of the people there spit at Jesus. They covered Jesus’ eyes and hit him with their fists. They said, “Be a prophet {\cf2\super [221]} and tell us who hit you!” Then the guards led Jesus away and beat him.


Pilate said to them, “You brought this man (Jesus) to me. You said that he was trying to change the people. But I judged him before you all. I found no wrong that he had done. Jesus is not guilty of the things you say.


But all the people shouted, “Kill him! Let Barabbas go free!”


The people stood there watching \{Jesus\}. The Jewish leaders laughed at Jesus. They said, “If he is God’s Chosen One, the Christ, {\cf2\super [378]} then let him save himself. He saved other people, didn’t he?”


One of the criminals began to shout very bad things at Jesus: “Aren’t you the Christ {\cf2\super [379]} ? Then save yourself! And save us too!”


But the Jews \{that did not believe\} became jealous. They hired some bad men from the city. These bad men gathered many people and made trouble in the city. They went to Jason’s house, looking for Paul and Silas. They wanted to bring Paul and Silas out before the people.


Even one of their own prophets (teachers) \{from Crete\} said, “Cretan people are always liars. They are evil animals and lazy people who do nothing but eat.”
