Elisha went from that city to Bethel. Elisha was walking up the hill to the city, and some boys were coming down out of the city. They began making fun of Elisha. They said to him, “Go up, you bald headed man! Go up, you bald headed man!”


The nation of Israel is full of guilt. This guilt is like a heavy weight the people have to carry. Those people are like bad children from evil families. They left the Lord. They insulted the Holy One (God) of Israel. They left him and treated him like a stranger.


At that time, Ephraim (Israel) will not be jealous of Judah. Judah will have no enemies left. And Judah will not cause trouble for Ephraim.


\{God says,\} “I will cause the people of Egypt to fight against themselves. Men will fight their brothers. Neighbors will be against neighbors. Cities will be against cities. States will be against states. {\cf2\super [187]}


Evil is like a small fire. First, the fire burns weeds and thorns. Next, the fire burns the larger bushes in the forest. And finally, it becomes a great fire—and everything goes up in smoke.


“Jehoiakim, your eyes look\par only for what benefits yourself.\par You are always thinking about\par getting more for yourself.\par You are willing to kill innocent people.\par You are willing to steal things\par from other people.”\par


“‘In Jerusalem, you men take money to kill people. You people lend money and charge interest on those loans. You people cheat their neighbors just to make a little money. And you people have forgotten me.’ The Lord my Master said these things.

The judges in Jerusalem accept bribes\par to help them decide who wins in court.\par The priests in Jerusalem must be paid\par before they will teach the people.\par People must pay the prophets\par before they will look into the future.\par And then those leaders expect the Lord\par to help them. They say,\par “The Lord lives here with us.\par So nothing bad will happen to us.”\par


I mean, all of the faithful people are gone.\par There are no good people left\par in this country.\par Every person is waiting to kill someone.\par Every person is trying to trap his brother.\par


And I don’t feel sorry for the people living in this country.” The Lord said these things, “Look, I will let everyone be abused by his neighbor and king. I will let them destroy their country—I will not stop them!”


Then I will come to you—and I will do the right thing. I will be like a person that is ready to tell the judge about the bad things people did. Some people do evil magic. Some people do the sin of adultery. {\cf2\super [19]} Some people make false promises. Some people cheat their workers—they don’t pay them the money they promised. People don’t help widows and orphans. {\cf2\super [20]} People don’t help strangers. People don’t respect me!” The Lord All-Powerful said these things.


Then they spit in Jesus’ face. And they hit him with their fists. Other people slapped Jesus.


Some of the people there spit at Jesus. They covered Jesus’ eyes and hit him with their fists. They said, “Be a prophet {\cf2\super [221]} and tell us who hit you!” Then the guards led Jesus away and beat him.


They covered his eyes so that he could not see them. Then they hit him and said, “Be a prophet {\cf2\super [365]} and tell us who hit you!”


But you show no respect to the poor man. And you know that the rich people are the people who always try to control your lives. And they are the people who take you to court.


People worked in your fields, but you did not pay them. Those people are crying out against you. Those people harvested your crops. Now the Lord (God) of heaven’s armies {\cf2\super [24]} has heard the things they are shouting.
