I will give you a thank offering.\par I will call on the Lord’s name.\par


Lord, you made me understand this: {\cf2\super [250]} \par You don’t really want\par sacrifices {\cf2\super [251]} and grain offerings.\par You don’t really want\par burnt offerings and sin offerings.\par


So if a person gives a thank offering, {\cf2\super [302]} \par then he shows me honor.\par But if a person lives right,\par then I will show him my power to save.”\par


The Lord hates the offerings that evil people give. But the Lord is happy to hear a good person’s prayers.


The Lord is not happy when evil people offer him sacrifices, especially when those evil people are trying to get something from him.


\{God says,\} “Why do you continue giving me all these sacrifices? {\cf2\super [7]} I have had enough of your sacrifices of goats and fat from bulls, sheep, and goats.


Some people kill bulls \{as a sacrifice\},\par but they also beat people.\par Those people kill sheep as a sacrifice,\par but they also break the necks of dogs!\par Those people offer up grain offerings,\par but they also offer the blood of pigs! {\cf2\super [475]} \par Those people burn incense, {\cf2\super [476]} \par but they also love their worthless idols. {\cf2\super [477]} \par Those people choose their own ways.\par And they also love their terrible idols.\par


This is what the Lord says about the people of Judah: “The people of Judah really love to leave me. Those people don’t stop themselves from leaving me. So now, the Lord will not accept them. Now the Lord will remember the bad things they do. The Lord will punish them for their sins.”


\{The Lord says,\}\par “Why do you bring me incense {\cf2\super [43]} \par from the country of Sheba? {\cf2\super [44]} \par Why do you bring me sweet-smelling cane from a far away country?\par Your burnt offerings don’t make\par me happy.\par Your sacrifices don’t please me.”\par


The Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel, says these things: “Go and offer as many burnt offerings and sacrifices as you want. Eat the meat of those sacrifices yourselves.


“This is the law of the sacrifice [72] of fellowship offerings that a person offers to the Lord:


Take your noisy songs away from here.\par I will not listen to the music\par from your harps.\par


“Priests, you should ask the Lord to be good to us. But he does not listen to you. And it is all your fault.” The Lord All-Powerful said these things.


But Samuel answered, “Which pleases the Lord more: burnt offerings and sacrifices [138] or obeying the Lord’s command? It is better to obey God than to offer sacrifices to him. It is better to listen to God than to offer the fat from rams.
