The name of that place was Luz. But Jacob named it Bethel. [164]


So the king asked his advisers what he should do. {They gave him their advice.} So Jeroboam made two golden calves. King Jeroboam said to the people, “You should not go to Jerusalem to worship. Israel, these are the gods that brought you out of Egypt.” [155]


King Jeroboam put one golden calf in Bethel. [156] He put the other golden calf in the city of Dan. [157]


So King Jeroboam chose his own time for a holiday for the Israelites. It was the 15th day of the eighth month. During that time he offered sacrifices and burned incense [159] on the altar that he built. This was in the city of Bethel.


Elisha went from that city to Bethel. Elisha was walking up the hill to the city, and some boys were coming down out of the city. They began making fun of Elisha. They said to him, “Go up, you bald headed man! Go up, you bald headed man!”


Elijah said to Elisha, “Please stay here, because the Lord told me to go to Jericho.”


Elijah said to Elisha, “Please stay here, because the Lord told me to go to the Jordan River.”


But the child’s mother said, “I promise, as the Lord lives and as you live, I won’t leave without you!”


If you do those things,\par then you will be able to use my name\par to make a promise:\par You will be able to say,\par ‘As the Lord lives.’\par And you will be able to use those words\par in a truthful, honest, and right way.\par If you do these things, then the nations\par will be blessed by the Lord.\par They will brag about the things\par that the Lord has done.”\par


Those enemies of Christ were in our group. But they left us. They did not really belong with us. If they were really part of our group, then they would have stayed with us. But they left. This shows that none of them really belonged with us.
