and Hazael asked, ‘Why is my lord weeping? ’ He replied, ‘Because I know the evil you will do to the people of Israel. You will set their fortresses on fire. You will kill their young men with the sword. You will dash their children to pieces. You will rip open their pregnant women.’


So he brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans,  who killed their fit young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary. He had no pity on young men or young women, elderly or aged; he handed them all over to him.


Their children will be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses will be looted, and their wives raped.


These two things will happen to you suddenly, in one day: loss of children and widowhood. They will happen to you in their entirety, in spite of your many sorceries and the potency of your spells.


Their arrows are sharpened, and all their bows strung. Their horses’ hooves are like flint; their chariot wheels are like a whirlwind.


Therefore, hand their children over to famine, and give them over to the power of the sword. Let their wives become childless and widowed, their husbands slain by deadly disease, their young men struck down by the sword in battle.


Their quiver is like an open grave; they are all warriors.


Therefore, her young men will fall in her public squares; all the warriors will perish in that day. This is the  Lord’s declaration.


They grasp bow and javelin. They are cruel and show no mercy. Their voice roars like the sea, and they ride on horses, lined up like men in battle formation against you, Daughter Babylon.


With you I will smash man and woman; with you I will smash the old man and the youth; with you I will smash the young man and the young woman.

‘Suddenly, another beast appeared, a second one, that looked like a bear.  It was raised up on one side, with three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. It was told, “Get up! Gorge yourself on flesh.”


Samaria  will bear her guilt because she has rebelled against her God. They will fall by the sword; their children will be dashed to pieces, and their pregnant women ripped open.


One who scatters is coming up against you. Man the fortifications! Watch the road! Brace  yourself! Summon all your strength!


Yet she became an exile; she went into captivity. Her children were also dashed to pieces at the head of every street. They cast lots for her dignitaries, and all her nobles were bound in chains.
