"Speakto the sonsof Israel,saying,Theseare the creatureswhichyou may eatfrom allthe animalsthat are on the earth.
But I said,"Ah,LordGOD!Behold,I have neverbeendefiled;for from my youthuntilnowI have nevereatenwhatdiedof itself or was tornby beasts,norhas any uncleanmeatever enteredmy mouth."
But Danielmadeup his mindthat he would not defilehimself with the king'schoicefoodor with the winewhichhe drank;so he sought[permission] from the commanderof the officialsthat he might not defilehimself.
The LORDspokeagain to Mosesand to Aaron,sayingto them,
and they shall be abhorrentto you; you may not eatof their flesh,and their carcassesyou shall detest.
These,moreover, you shall detestamongthe birds;they are abhorrent,not to be eaten:the eagleand the vultureand the buzzard,
Yettheseyou may eatamongallthe wingedinsectswhich walkon [all] fours:those whichhave abovetheir feetjointed legswith whichto jumpon the earth.
Now theseare to you the uncleanamong the swarmingthingswhich swarmon the earth:the mole,and the mouse,and the greatlizardin its kinds,
Whateverdividesa hoof,thus makingsplithoofs,[and] chewsthe cud,among the animals,that you may eat.
Anyof the foodwhichmay be eaten,on whichwatercomes,shall becomeunclean,and anyliquidwhichmay be drunkin everyvesselshall becomeunclean.
Also ifone of the animalsdieswhichyou have for food,the one who touchesits carcassbecomesuncleanuntilevening.
Nevertheless,you are not to eatof these,among those which chewthe cud,or among those which dividethe hoof:the camel,for though it chewscud,it does not dividethe hoof,it is uncleanto you.
Theseyou may eat,whateveris in the water:allthat have finsand scales,those in the water,in the seasor in the rivers,you may eat.
"[It is] not whatentersinto the mouth[that] defilesthe man,but whatproceedsout of the mouth,thisdefilesthe man."
Do not be carried awayby variedand strangeteachings;for it is goodfor the heartto be strengthenedby grace,not by foods,throughwhichthosewho were so occupiedwere not benefited.
since they [relate] onlyto foodand drinkand variouswashings,regulationsfor the bodyimposeduntila timeof reformation.
