Then the menof Gibeonsent[word] to Joshuato the campat Gilgal,saying,"Do not abandonyour servants;comeup to us quicklyand saveus and helpus, for allthe kingsof the Amoritesthat livein the hillcountryhave assembledagainstus."
Then she saddleda donkeyand saidto her servant,"Driveand goforward; do not slowdownthe pacefor me unlessI tellyou."
As the mountainssurroundJerusalem,So the LORDsurroundsHis peopleFrom thistimeforth and forever.
For the LORDis our judge,The LORDis our lawgiver,The LORDis our king;He will saveus--
"Amalekis livingin the landof the Negevand the Hittitesand the Jebusitesand the Amoritesare livingin the hillcountry,and the Canaanitesare livingby the seaand by the sideof the Jordan."
Nowat thistimeMaryaroseand wentin a hurryto the hill country,to a cityof Judah,
"So I tookthe headsof your tribes,wiseand experiencedmen,and appointedthem headsoveryou, leadersof thousandsand of hundreds,of fiftiesand of tens,and officersfor your tribes.
So the fivekingsof the Amorites,the kingof Jerusalem,the kingof Hebron,the kingof Jarmuth,the kingof Lachish,[and] the kingof Eglon,gatheredtogether and wentup, they with alltheir armies,and campedby Gibeonand foughtagainstit.
So Joshuawentup from Gilgal,he and allthe peopleof warwith him and allthe valiantwarriors.
Thus they gavethem Kiriath-arba,[Arba being] the fatherof Anak(that is, Hebron),in the hillcountryof Judah,with its surroundingpasturelands.
While the sonsof Israelcampedat Gilgalthey observedthe Passoveron the eveningof the fourteenthdayof the monthon the desertplainsof Jericho.
Joshuamadepeacewith them and madea covenantwith them, to let them live;and the leadersof the congregationswore[an oath] to them.
They wentto Joshuato the campat Gilgaland saidto him and to the menof Israel,"We have comefrom a farcountry;nowtherefore, makea covenantwith us."
But they saidto Joshua,"We are your servants."Then Joshuasaidto them, "Whoare you and wheredo you comefrom?"
