Now when the inhabitantsof the land,the Canaanites,sawthe mourningat the threshingfloorof Atad,they said,"Thisis a grievousmourningfor the Egyptians."Thereforeit was namedAbel-mizraim,whichis beyondthe Jordan.
And there was strifebetweenthe herdsmenof Abram'slivestockand the herdsmenof Lot'slivestock.Now the Canaaniteand the Perizzitewere dwellingthenin the land.
Then Abrahamsaidto him, "Bewarethat you do not takemy sonbackthere!
Then Jacobsaidto Simeonand Levi,"You have broughttroubleon me by makingme odiousamong the inhabitantsof the land,among the Canaanitesand the Perizzites;and my menbeing fewin number,they will gathertogether againstme and attackme and I will be destroyed,I and my household."
When they cameto the threshingfloorof Atad,whichis beyondthe Jordan,they lamentedtherewith a verygreatand sorrowfullamentation;and he observedsevendaysmourningfor his father.
Thushis sonsdidfor him as he had chargedthem;
"Are they not acrossthe Jordan,westof the waytoward the sunset,in the landof the Canaaniteswho livein the Arabah,oppositeGilgal,besidethe oaksof Moreh?
Let me, I pray,crossoverand seethe fairlandthat is beyondthe Jordan,that goodhillcountryand Lebanon.'
Goup to the topof Pisgahand liftup your eyesto the westand northand southand east,and see[it] with your eyes,for you shall not crossoverthisJordan.
and the goldenmice,[according] to the numberof allthe citiesof the Philistinesbelonging to the fivelords,bothof fortifiedcitiesand of countryvillages.The largestoneon whichthey setthe arkof the LORD[is a witness] to thisdayin the fieldof Joshuathe Beth-shemite.
