and the Horitesin their MountSeir,as faras El-paran,whichis by the wilderness.
and Esausaidto Jacob,"Pleaselet me havea swallowof that redstuffthere, for I am famished."Thereforehis namewas calledEdom.
Then Jacobsentmessengersbeforehim to his brotherEsauin the landof Seir,the countryof Edom.
He also commandedthem saying,"Thusyou shall sayto my lordEsau:'Thussaysyour servantJacob,"I have sojournedwith Laban,and stayeduntilnow;
Now theseare [the records of] the generationsof Esau(that is, Edom).
chiefMagdiel,chiefIram.Theseare the chiefsof Edom(that is, Esau,the fatherof the Edomites),according to their habitationsin the landof their possession.
Thesethen are [the records of] the generationsof Esauthe fatherof the Edomitesin the hillcountryof Seir.
From them, from the sonsof Simeon,fivehundredmenwentto MountSeir,with Pelatiah,Neariah,Rephaiahand Uzziel,the sonsof Ishi,as their leaders.
"Nowbehold,the sonsof Ammonand Moaband MountSeir,whomYou did not letIsraelinvadewhen they cameout of the landof Egypt(they turnedasidefrom them and did not destroythem),
For the sonsof Ammonand Moabroseup againstthe inhabitantsof MountSeirdestroying[them] completely;and when they had finishedwith the inhabitantsof Seir,they helpedto destroyoneanother.
Likewise, alsoallthe Jewswhowere in Moaband among the sonsof Ammonand in Edomand whowere in allthe [other] countries,heardthat the kingof Babylonhad lefta remnantfor Judah,and that he had appointedoverthem Gedaliahthe sonof Ahikam,the sonof Shaphan.
The visionof Obadiah.Thussaysthe LordGODconcerning Edom--We have hearda reportfrom the LORD,And an envoyhas been sentamong the nations[saying], "Ariseand let us goagainsther for battle"--
"The arroganceof your hearthas deceivedyou, You who livein the cleftsof the rock,In the loftinessof your dwellingplace,Who sayin your heart,Whowill bringme downto earth?'
but I have hatedEsau,and I have madehis mountainsa desolationand [appointed] his inheritancefor the jackalsof the wilderness."
justas He didfor the sonsof Esau,who livein Seir,whenHe destroyedthe Horitesfrom beforethem; they dispossessedthem and settledin their placeevento thisday.
and commandthe people,saying,"You will passthrough the territoryof your brothersthe sonsof Esauwho livein Seir;and they will be afraidof you. So be verycareful;
do not provokethem, for I will not giveyou anyof their land,even[as little as] a footstepbecauseI have givenMountSeirto Esauas a possession.
To IsaacI gaveJacoband Esau,and to EsauI gaveMountSeirto possessit; but Jacoband his sonswentdownto Egypt.
Now when Saulhad takenthe kingdomoverIsrael,he foughtagainst allhis enemieson everyside,against Moab,the sonsof Ammon,Edom,the kingsof Zobah,and the Philistines;and whereverhe turned,he inflictedpunishment.
