"Yet it was I who destroyedthe Amoritebeforethem, Though his height[was] like the heightof cedarsAnd he [was] strongas the oaks;I even destroyedhis fruitaboveand his rootbelow.
"Then in the fourthgenerationthey will returnhere,for the iniquityof the Amoriteis not yetcomplete."
and the Jebusites,the Amorites,the Girgashites,
"His rootsare driedbelow,And his branchis cutoffabove.
"So I have comedownto deliverthem from the powerof the Egyptians,and to bringthem up from that landto a goodand spaciousland,to a landflowingwith milkand honey,to the placeof the Canaaniteand the Hittiteand the Amoriteand the Perizziteand the Hiviteand the Jebusite.
"Be sure to observewhatI am commandingyou this day:behold,I am going to driveout the Amoritebeforeyou, and the Canaanite,the Hittite,the Perizzite,the Hiviteand the Jebusite.
Behold,the Lord,the GODof hosts,will lopoffthe boughswith a terriblecrash;Those also who are tallin staturewill be cutdownAnd those whoare loftywill be abased.
Therefore,as a tongueof fireconsumesstubbleAnd drygrasscollapsesinto the flame,So their rootwill becomelike rotand their blossomblowawayas dust;For they have rejectedthe lawof the LORDof hostsAnd despisedthe wordof the HolyOneof Israel.
"Say,'Thussaysthe LordGOD,"Will it thrive?Will he not pullup its rootsand cutoffits fruit,so that it withers--so that allits sproutingleaveswither?And neitherby greatstrengthnorby manypeoplecan it be raisedfrom its roots[again].
"For behold,the dayis coming,burninglike a furnace;and allthe arrogantand everyevildoerwill be chaff;and the daythat is comingwill setthem ablaze,"saysthe LORDof hosts,"sothat it will leavethem neitherrootnorbranch."
"So the LORD'Sangerburnedagainst Israel,and He made them wanderin the wildernessfortyyears,untilthe entiregenerationof those who had doneevilin the sightof the LORDwas destroyed.
Wherecan we goup? Our brethrenhave made our heartsmelt,saying,"The peopleare biggerand tallerthanwe; the citiesare largeand fortifiedto heaven.And besides,we sawthe sonsof the Anakimthere."'

Joshuasaid,"By thisyou shall knowthat the livingGodis amongyou, and that He will assuredlydispossessfrom beforeyou the Canaanite,the Hittite,the Hivite,the Perizzite,the Girgashite,the Amorite,and the Jebusite.
