Some of the crowdconcluded[it was] Alexander,since the Jewshad put him forward;and having motionedwith his hand,Alexanderwas intendingto make a defenseto the assembly.
But when he cameout, he was unableto speakto them; and they realizedthat he had seena visionin the temple;and he kept making signsto them, and remainedmute.
But motioningto them with his handto be silent,he describedto them howthe Lordhad ledhim out of the prison.And he said,"Reportthese thingsto Jamesand the brethren."Thenhe leftand wentto anotherplace.
Paulstoodup, and motioningwith his handsaid,"Menof Israel,and you who fearGod,listen:
But when they recognizedthat he was a Jew,a [single] outcryarosefrom them allas they shoutedfor abouttwohours,"Greatis Artemisof the Ephesians!"
When he had given him permission,Paul,standingon the stairs,motionedto the peoplewith his hand;and when there was a greathush,he spoketo them in the Hebrewdialect,saying,
When the governorhad noddedfor him to speak,Paulresponded:"Knowingthat for manyyearsyou have beena judgeto thisnation,I cheerfullymake my defense,
For it is onlyrightfor me to feelthis wayaboutyou all,becauseI haveyou in my heart,since bothin my imprisonmentand in the defenseand confirmationof the gospel,you allare partakersof gracewith me.
Among theseare Hymenaeusand Alexander,whomI have handed overto Satan,sothat they will be taughtnot to blaspheme.
Alexanderthe coppersmithdidme muchharm;the Lordwill repayhim accordingto his deeds.
