Then they tookthe oxwhichwas giventhem and they preparedit and calledon the nameof Baalfrom morninguntilnoonsaying,"O Baal,answerus." But therewas novoiceand nooneanswered.And they leapedaboutthe altarwhichthey made.
"And when you are praying,do not use meaningless repetitionas the Gentilesdo, for they supposethat they will be heardfor their many words.
and when they had broughtthem to the chief magistrates,they said,"Thesemenare throwingour cityinto confusion,beingJews,
For a mannamedDemetrius,a silversmith,who madesilvershrinesof Artemis,was bringingnolittlebusinessto the craftsmen;
"You seeand hearthat not onlyin Ephesus,but in almostallof Asia,thisPaulhas persuadedand turned awaya considerablenumber of people,sayingthat gods madewith handsare nogods[at all].
When they heard[this] and were filledwith rage,they [began] cryingout, saying,"Greatis Artemisof the Ephesians!"
Some of the crowdconcluded[it was] Alexander,since the Jewshad put him forward;and having motionedwith his hand,Alexanderwas intendingto make a defenseto the assembly.
Afterquietingthe crowd,the town clerksaid,"Menof Ephesus,whatmanis there after allwhodoes not knowthat the cityof the Ephesiansis guardian of the templeof the greatArtemisand of the [image] which fell down from heaven?
You who saythat one should not commitadultery, do you commit adultery?You who abhoridols,do you rob temples?
they worshipedthe dragonbecausehe gavehis authorityto the beast;and they worshipedthe beast,saying,"Whois likethe beast,and whois ableto wage warwith him?"
