And Davidwentfrom thereto Mizpahof Moab;and he saidto the kingof Moab,"Pleaselet my fatherand my mothercome[and stay] with you untilI knowwhatGodwill dofor me."
So Josephsettledhis fatherand his brothersand gavethem a possessionin the landof Egypt,in the bestof the land,in the landof Rameses,as Pharaohhad ordered.
He defeatedMoab,and measuredthem with the line,making them liedownon the ground;and he measuredtwolinesto putto deathand one fulllineto keepalive.And the Moabitesbecameservantsto David,bringingtribute.
"Honoryour fatherand your mother,that your daysmay be prolongedin the landwhichthe LORDyour Godgivesyou.
but ifanywidowhaschildrenorgrandchildren,they must firstlearnto practice pietyin regard to their ownfamilyand to make some returnto their parents;for thisis acceptablein the sightof God.
Now the Spiritof the LORDcameupon Jephthah,so that he passedthroughGileadand Manasseh;then he passedthroughMizpahof Gilead,and from Mizpahof Gileadhe wenton to the sonsof Ammon.
"Moreover,I have acquiredRuththe Moabitess,the widowof Mahlon,to be my wifein order to raiseup the nameof the deceasedon his inheritance,so that the nameof the deceasedwill not be cutofffrom his brothersor from the courtof his [birth] place;you are witnessestoday."
The neighborwomengavehim a name,saying,"A sonhas been bornto Naomi!"So they namedhim Obed.He is the fatherof Jesse,the fatherof David.
Now when Saulhad takenthe kingdomoverIsrael,he foughtagainst allhis enemieson everyside,against Moab,the sonsof Ammon,Edom,the kingsof Zobah,and the Philistines;and whereverhe turned,he inflictedpunishment.
Everyonewho was in distress,and everyonewhowas in debt,and everyonewho was discontentedgatheredto him; and he becamecaptainoverthem. Now there were about fourhundredmenwith him.
Then he leftthem with the kingof Moab;and they stayedwith him allthe timethat Davidwas in the stronghold.
So Samueltoldhim everythingand hidnothingfrom him. And he said,"It is the LORD;let Him dowhatseems goodto Him."
