Jeroboam appointed a festival on the fifteenth day of the eighth month like the festival that was in Judah, and he offered sacrifices on the altar; so he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he had made. And he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places that he had made.


For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: I am going to banish from this place, in your days and before your eyes, the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride.


And I will banish from them the sound of mirth and the sound of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones and the light of the lamp.


And I will bring to an end the sound of mirth and gladness, the voice of the bride and bridegroom in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, for the land shall become a waste.


I will silence the music of your songs; the sound of your lyres shall be heard no more.


For the Israelites shall remain many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or pillar, without ephod or teraphim.


They have dealt faithlessly with the Lord, for they have borne illegitimate children. Now the new moon shall devour them along with their fields.


Your strength shall be spent to no purpose: your land shall not yield its produce, and the trees of the land shall not yield their fruit.


I hate, I despise your festivals, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies.


The songs of the temple shall become wailings on that day,” says the Lord God; “the dead bodies shall be many, cast out in every place. Be silent!”
