The WHO warns about an “X disease” 20 times more deadly than Covid

On the upcoming Wednesday, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, will be participating as a speaker in a session at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

The WHO warns about an “X disease” 20 times more deadly than Covid

This session is titled ‘Preparing for Disease X’ and will feature the presence of other notable figures.

The WHO has brought to light that ‘Disease X’ signifies the potential for a severe global epidemic caused by an unknown pathogen that could affect humans.

The organization has cautioned that this “Disease X, if caused by a hypothetical pathogen, could result in 20 times more deaths than the current coronavirus pandemic.”

This potential disease is being regarded with the same level of importance in terms of research as other perilous diseases that we currently face, and is a part of the priorities of the international body.

The updated list of these diseases exclusively includes viral agents that pose a high risk to public health in terms of epidemics and for which there are insufficient or effective countermeasures.

The 8 priority public health emergencies identified by the WHO are:

  1. Covid-19.

  2. Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever.

  3. Ebola virus disease and Marburg virus disease.

  4. Lassa fever.

  5. Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

  6. Nipah and henipavirus diseases.

  7. Rift Valley fever.

  8. Zika.

According to Fortune, the inclusion of this topic in the World Economic Forum meeting sparked intense debate on social media.

Many users pointed out that preparations for an unknown disease could be similar to the lockdown measures implemented during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Monica Crowley, former Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at the US Department of the Treasury during the Trump Administration, expressed on X, formerly Twitter, that a new outbreak “just in time for the elections” would enable “unelected globalists” to impose lockdowns, “restrict freedom of speech, and further undermine freedoms.”

“Sounds far-fetched? So was what happened in 2020,” she added.

Dr. Amesh Adalja, senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security (USA), responded to this stance by stating that public health professionals have always conducted mental and practical exercises in preparation for pandemics.

“To arbitrarily suggest that these exercises and meetings are part of some conspiracy evades their real purpose and the issues they are trying to address,” he remarked.

Dr. Stuart Ray, Vice Chair of Medicine for Integrity and Analysis of Data at the Johns Hopkins Department of Medicine, stated that it would be irresponsible for world leaders not to convene at the forum.

“The coordination of public health responses is not a conspiracy, it is simply responsible planning,” he commented.

The Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing (Rospotrebnadzor) of Russia indicated that the forthcoming discussion could be driven more by economic motives than scientific ones.

According to them, the WHO is seeking to promote the idea of the need to reform global health architecture after the end of the Covid-19 pandemic. Citing future threats and the lack of global preparedness, they are calling for increased funding for the organization.
