And he wrote in the name of King Ahasuerus and sealed it with the king’s signet ring. Then he sent the letters by mounted couriers riding on swift horses that were used in the king’s service, bred from the royal stud,


So the couriers, mounted on their swift horses that were used in the king’s service, rode out hurriedly, urged by the king’s command. And the decree was issued in Susa the citadel.


“My days are swifter than a runner; they flee away; they see no good.


Crash follows hard on crash; the whole land is laid waste. Suddenly my tents are laid waste, my curtains in a moment.


“Declare among the nations and proclaim, set up a banner and proclaim, conceal it not, and say: ‘Babylon is taken, Bel is put to shame, Merodach is dismayed. Her images are put to shame, her idols are dismayed.’


I set a snare for you and you were taken, O Babylon, and you did not know it; you were found and caught, because you opposed the Lord.


“The king of Babylon heard the report of them, and his hands fell helpless; anguish seized him, pain as of a woman in labor.


the fords have been seized, the marshes are burned with fire, and the soldiers are in panic.


That very night Belshazzar the Chaldean king was killed.
