Because thy servant hath found grace before thee, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewn to me, in saving my life, and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil seize me, and I die:


And Jacob called the name of the place Phanuel, saying: I have seen God face to face, and my soul has been saved.


And take the blessing, which I have brought thee, and which God hath given me, who giveth all things. He took it with much ado at his brother's earnest pressing him,

Juda answered: The man declared unto us with the attestation of an oath, saying: You shall not see my face, unless you bring your youngest brother with you.


And when he saw that the day of his death drew nigh, he called his son Joseph, and said to him: If I have found favour in thy sight, put thy hand under my thigh, and thou shalt shew me this kindness and truth, not to bury me in Egypt.


And the time of the mourning being expired, Joseph spoke to the family of Pharao: If I have found favour in your sight, speak in the ears of Pharao.


But the king said: Let him return unto his house, and let him not see my face. So Absalom returned into his house, and saw not the king's face.


And Absalom dwelt two years in Jerusalem, and saw not the king's face.


And Absalom answered Joab: I sent to thee beseeching thee to come to me, that I might send thee to the king, to say to him: Wherefore am I come from Gessur? It had been better for me to be there. And he said: Very well. I will make a league with thee; but one thing I require of thee, saying: Thou shalt not see my face before thou bring Michol the daughter of Saul. And so thou shalt come, and see me.


He shall pray to God, and he will be gracious to him. And he shall see his face with joy: and he will render to man his justice.


Whilst my bones are broken, my enemies who trouble me have reproached me; Whilst they say to me day be day: Where is thy God?


Thus saith the Lord: The people that were left and escaped from the sword found grace in the desert: Israel shall go to his rest.


See that you despise not one of these little ones: for I say to you, that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.


And they shall see his face: and his name shall be on their foreheads.


She fell on her face and worshipping upon the ground said to him: Whence cometh this to me, that I should find grace before thy eyes, and that thou shouldst vouchsafe to take notice of me a woman of another country?


And he swore again to David. And David said: Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thy sight; and he will say: Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved. But truly as the Lord liveth, and thy soul liveth, there is but one step (as I may say) between me and death.
