And the Lord seeing that he despised Lia, opened her womb, but her sister remained barren.


His brethren therefore envied him: but his father considered the thing with himself.


And he went forward, one day's journey into the desert. And when he was there, and sat under a juniper-tree, he requested for his soul that he might die, and said: It is enough for me. Lord, take away my soul; for I am no better than my fathers.


Who is he that will plead against me? Let him come. Why am I consumed holding my peace?


Why did I not die in the womb? Why did I not perish when I came out of the belly?


Anger indeed killeth the foolish: and envy slayeth the little one.


Because he hath broken gates of brass, and burst the iron bars.


Soundness of heart is the life of the flesh: but envy is the rottenness of the bones.


Hell, and the mouth of the womb, and the earth which is not satisfied with water: and the fire never saith: It is enough.


Again I considered all the labours of men, and I remarked that their industries are exposed to the envy of their neighbour: so in this also there is vanity, and fruitless care.


But if it seem unto thee otherwise, I beseech thee to kill me: and let me find grace in thy eyes, that I be not afflicted with so great evils.


But he said: Why hast thou emulation for me? O that all the people might prophesy, and that the Lord would give them his spirit!


He left Judea, and went again into Galilee.


For his disciples were gone into the city to buy meats.


For, whereas there is among you envying and contention, are you not carnal, and walk according to man?


For the sorrow that is according to God worketh penance, steadfast unto salvation; but the sorrow of the world worketh death.


Envies, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like. Of the which I foretell you, as I have foretold to you, that they who do such things shall not obtain the kingdom of God.


For we ourselves also were some time unwise, incredulous, erring, slaves to divers desires and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.


But if you have bitter zeal, and there be contentions in your hearts; glory not, and be not liars against the truth.


Or do you think that the scripture saith in vain: To envy doth the spirit covet which dwelleth in you?


As Anna had her heart full of grief, she prayed to the Lord, shedding many tears.
