And Absalom rising up early stood by the entrance of the gate; and when any man had business to come to the king's judgment, Absalom called him to him, and said: Of what city art thou? He answered, and said: Thy servant is of such a tribe of Israel.


And they took Absalom, and cast him into a great pit in the forest: and they laid an exceeding great heap of stones upon him. But all Israel fled to their own dwellings.


And David sat between the two gates: and the watchman that was on the top of the gate upon the wall, lifting up his eyes, saw a man running alone.


And the king said to them: What seemeth good to you, that will I do. And the king stood by the gate: and all the people went forth by their troops, by hundreds and by thousands.


And the people shunned the going into the city that day as a people would do that hath turned their backs, and fled away from the battle.


And the herald proclaimed through all the army before the sun set, saying: Let every man return to his own city, and to his own country.


And Juda was put to the worst before Israel: and they fled every man to their dwellings.


And Joram came to Seira, and all the chariots with him. And he arose in the night, and defeated the Edomites that had surrounded him, and the captains of the chariots: but the people fled into their tents.


So the Philistines fought; and Israel was overthrown; and every man fled to his own dwelling. And there was an exceeding great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.
