28 Now, when Eliab his eldest brother heard this, when he was speaking with others, he was angry with David, and said: Why camest thou hither? And why didst thou leave those few sheep in the desert? I know thy pride, and the wickedness of thy heart: that thou art come down to see the battle.

His brethren therefore envied him: but his father considered the thing with himself.


And his brethren seeing that he was loved by his father, more than all his sons, hated him, and could not speak peaceably to him.


His brethren answered: Shalt thou be our king? Or shall we be subject to thy dominion? Therefore this matter of his dreams and words ministered nourishment to their envy and hatred.


And Roboam took to wife Mahalath, the daughter of Jerimoth, the son of David: and Abihail the daughter of Eliab, the son of Isai.


Extend thy mercy to them that know thee, and thy justice to them that are right in heart.


A brother that is helped by his brother, is like a strong city: and judgments are like the bars of cities.


Anger hath no mercy, nor fury when it breaketh forth: and who can bear the violence of one provoked?


Again I considered all the labours of men, and I remarked that their industries are exposed to the envy of their neighbour: so in this also there is vanity, and fruitless care.


And as a man's enemies shall be they of his own household.


For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.


And when his friends had heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him. For they said: He is become mad.


But these men blaspheme whatever things they know not: and what things soever they naturally know, like dumb beasts, in these they are corrupted.


Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren. And the spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward: and Samuel rose up, and went to Ramatha.


And the Lord said to Samuel: Look not on his countenance, nor on the height of his stature: because I have rejected him. Nor do I judge according to the look of man: for man seeth those things that appear, but the Lord beholdeth the heart.


And David said: What have I done? Is there not cause to speak?
