AND THOU, BETHLEHEM Ephrata, art a little one among the thousands of Juda: out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be the ruler in Israel: and his going forth is from the beginning, from the days of eternity.


But even for a month of days, till it come out at your nostrils, and become loathsome to you. Because you have cast off the Lord, who is in the midst of you, and have wept before him, saying: Why came we out of Egypt?


Speak to the children of Israel, and take of every one of them a rod by their kindreds, of all the princes of the tribes, twelve rods: and write the name of every man upon his rod.


When thou art come into the land, which the Lord thy God will give thee, and possessest it, and shalt say: I will set a king over me, as all nations have that are round about.


And Josue gathered together all the tribes of Israel in Sichem: and called for the ancients, and the princes, and the judges, and the masters. And they stood in the sight of the Lord.


And he said to them: I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: but the Lord shall rule over you.


And Samuel brought to him all the tribes of Israel, and the lot fell on the tribe of Benjamin.


But seeing that Naas king of the children of Ammon was come against you, you said to me: Nay, but a king shall reign over us: whereas the Lord your God was your king.


And the Lord saved Israel that day. And the fight went on as far as Bethaven.


And Saul said: Bring hither all the corners of the people; and know, and see by whom this sin hath happened to-day.


And the Lord again appeared in Silo for the Lord revealed himself to Samuel in Silo, according to the word of the Lord. And the word of Samuel came to pass to all Israel.


And it came to pass in those days, that the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight: and Israel went out to war against the Philistines, and camped by the Stone of help. And the Philistines came to Aphec,


But the people would not hear the voice of Samuel, and they said: Nay: but there shall be a king over us.


And they said to him: Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways. Make us a king, to judge us, as all nations have.
