to deprive the poor of justice, and to rob the oppressed among my people of their rights, making widows their plunder, and that the fatherless their prey!


In you have they treated father and mother with contempt. Among you they have oppressed the foreigner. In you they have wronged the fatherless and the widow.


They come to you as the people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear your words, but don’t do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goes after their gain.


They trample the heads of the poor into the dust of the earth and deny justice to the oppressed. A man and his father use the same maiden, to profane my holy name.


They covet fields and seize them, and houses, then take them away. They oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage.


But lately my people have risen up as an enemy. Y’all strip the robe and clothing from those who pass by without a care, returning from battle.


You who hate the good, and love the evil; who tear off their skin, and their flesh from off their bones;


“Woe to y’all, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Y’all keep shutting humans out of the Empire of Heaven. For y’all do not enter it, but neither to do allow others to enter.


They devour widows’ houses, and for appearance make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”


Meanwhile, a crowd of many thousands had gathered together, so that they were trampling on one other. Jesus began to tell his disciples first, “Y’all beware of the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.


“Y’all must beware of the scribes who like to walk in flowing robes, and who love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the places of honor at banquets.


Jesus looked up and saw the rich people who were putting their gifts into the temple treasury.


For y’all know that we never came with flattering speech or with a cover for greed—God is our witness—


They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny ʜɪᴍ. They are detestable, disobedient, and unfit for any good work.


Not many of y’all should become teachers, my siblings, knowing that we will receive a stricter judgment.
