When the people heard these distressing words, they began to mourn and no-one put on any ornaments.


A person’s own folly leads to their ruin, yet their heart rages against the Lord.


Lord, they came to you in their distress; when you disciplined them, they could barely whisper a prayer.


So tell them, “As surely as I live, declares the Lord, I will do to you the very thing I heard you say:


Of the men who went to explore the land, only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived.


But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’


Afterwards, as you know, when he wanted to inherit this blessing, he was rejected. Even though he sought the blessing with tears, he could not change what he had done.


That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies; they turn their backs and run because they have been made liable to destruction. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction.
