Ruthless witnesses come forward; they question me on things I know nothing about.


Yet for your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.


he will swallow up death for ever. The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces; he will remove his people’s disgrace from all the earth. The Lord has spoken.


‘Hear me, you who know what is right, you people who have taken my instruction to heart: do not fear the reproach of mere mortals or be terrified by their insults.


Hear the word of the Lord, you who tremble at his word; ‘Your own people who hate you, and exclude you because of my name, have said, “Let the Lord be glorified, that we may see your joy!” Yet they will be put to shame.


‘That’s not true!’ Jeremiah said. ‘I am not deserting to the Babylonians.’ But Irijah would not listen to him; instead, he arrested Jeremiah and brought him to the officials.


On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles.


You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.


It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul, how much more the members of his household!


Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.


And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.


‘Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me.

‘You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them.

For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.


‘But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name.


Everyone will hate you because of me.


Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.


For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.


They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me.


Then they hurled insults at him and said, ‘You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses!


I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.’


As it is written: ‘For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.’


We are fools for Christ, but you are so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are honoured, we are dishonoured!


For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body.


For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him,


When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.


If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.


You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary.
