But while he was still living, he gave gifts to the sons of his concubines and sent them away from his son Isaac to the land of the east.


In the morning his mind was troubled, so he sent for all the magicians and wise men of Egypt. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but no-one could interpret them for him.


The sceptre will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he to whom it belongs shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be his.

But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.


When Herod realised that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.


After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt


When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.


‘In Bethlehem in Judea,’ they replied, ‘for this is what the prophet has written:


Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared.


In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron.


Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.

Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?’
