Why do you complain to him that he responds to no-one’s words?


I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say, “My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.”


At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, ‘I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.


‘Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.’


Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.’ And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.


So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, ‘Father, I thank you that you have heard me.


‘Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? “Father, save me from this hour”? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.


Father, glorify your name!’ Then a voice came from heaven, ‘I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.’


Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden.


In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will,


he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ,


according to his eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.


He has saved us and called us to a holy life – not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time,
