Then Leah said, ‘How happy I am! The women will call me happy.’ So she named him Asher.


‘Now then, tell my servant David, “This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel.


He will respond to the prayer of the destitute; he will not despise their plea.


He remembered us in our low estate His love endures for ever.


Though the Lord is exalted, he looks kindly on the lowly; though lofty, he sees them from afar.


May his name endure for ever; may it continue as long as the sun. Then all nations will be blessed through him, and they will call him blessed.


Has not my hand made all these things, and so they came into being?’ declares the Lord. ‘These are the ones I look on with favour: those who are humble and contrite in spirit, and who tremble at my word.


‘Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land,’ says the Lord Almighty.


The angel went to her and said, ‘Greetings, you who are highly favoured! The Lord is with you.’


In a loud voice she exclaimed: ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!


Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfil his promises to her!’

As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, ‘Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.’


And she made a vow, saying, ‘Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.’


He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes and makes them inherit a throne of honour. ‘For the foundations of the earth are the Lord’s; on them he has set the world.
