They all lose heart; they come trembling from their strongholds.


My days are like the evening shadow; I wither away like grass.


My heart is blighted and withered like grass; I forget to eat my food.


The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field;


for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away.


‘Surely everyone goes around like a mere phantom; in vain they rush about, heaping up wealth without knowing whose it will finally be.


In the morning it springs up new, but by evening it is dry and withered.


Everyone comes naked from their mother’s womb, and as everyone comes, so they depart. They take nothing from their toil that they can carry in their hands.


Woe to that wreath, the pride of Ephraim’s drunkards, to the fading flower, his glorious beauty, set on the head of a fertile valley – to that city, the pride of those laid low by wine!
