James 1:12 - New International Version (Anglicised)

12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, ‘Abraham!’ ‘Here I am,’ he replied.


Then I said: ‘Lord, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments,


He replied, ‘You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?’ In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.


‘Blessed is the one whom God corrects; so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty.


The Lord examines the righteous, but the wicked, those who love violence, he hates with a passion.


Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word.


It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.


I know, Lord, that your laws are righteous, and that in faithfulness you have afflicted me.


But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you.


Blessed is the one you discipline, Lord, the one you teach from your law;


but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.


The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but the Lord tests the heart.


Since ancient times no-one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.


This third I will put into the fire; I will refine them like silver and test them like gold. They will call on my name and I will answer them; I will say, “They are my people,” and they will say, “The Lord is our God.” ’


You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.

Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.


However, as it is written: ‘What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived’ – the things God has prepared for those who love him –


But whoever loves God is known by God.


Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last for ever.


you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. The Lord your God is testing you to find out whether you love him with all your heart and with all your soul.


Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.


Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.


Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.


Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day – and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.


Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you endured in a great conflict full of suffering.


By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son,


And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says, ‘My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,


And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.


Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?


As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.


But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. ‘Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.’


But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.


If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.


And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.


And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.


We love because he first loved us.


Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown.


Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent.


To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne.
