Hosea 13:2 - New International Version (Anglicised)

2 Now they sin more and more; they make idols for themselves from their silver, cleverly fashioned images, all of them the work of craftsmen. It is said of these people, ‘They offer human sacrifices! They kiss calf-idols!’

Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel – all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.’


‘You must not bring those prisoners here,’ they said, ‘or we will be guilty before the Lord. Do you intend to add to our sin and guilt? For our guilt is already great, and his fierce anger rests on Israel.’


But unlike his father Manasseh, he did not humble himself before the Lord; Amon increased his guilt.


Kiss his son, or he will be angry and your way will lead to your destruction, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.


Why should you be beaten anymore? Why do you persist in rebellion? Your whole head is injured, your whole heart afflicted.


‘Woe to the obstinate children,’ declares the Lord, ‘to those who carry out plans that are not mine, forming an alliance, but not by my Spirit, heaping sin upon sin;


People who do that will be put to shame; such craftsmen are only human beings. Let them all come together and take their stand; they will be brought down to terror and shame.


‘Gather together and come; assemble, you fugitives from the nations. Ignorant are those who carry about idols of wood, who pray to gods that cannot save.


Some pour out gold from their bags and weigh out silver on the scales; they hire a goldsmith to make it into a god, and they bow down and worship it.


‘Remember this, keep it in mind, take it to heart, you rebels.


They adorn it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so that it will not totter.


They are all senseless and foolish; they are taught by worthless wooden idols.


Why then have these people turned away? Why does Jerusalem always turn away? They cling to deceit; they refuse to return.


Israel was a spreading vine; he brought forth fruit for himself. As his fruit increased, he built more altars; as his land prospered, he adorned his sacred stones.


The people who live in Samaria fear for the calf-idol of Beth Aven. Its people will mourn over it, and so will its idolatrous priests, those who had rejoiced over its splendour, because it is taken from them into exile.


But the more they were called, the more they went away from me. They sacrificed to the Baals and they burned incense to images.


A sword will flash in their cities; it will devour their false prophets and put an end to their plans.


Assyria cannot save us; we will not mount warhorses. We will never again say “Our gods” to what our own hands have made, for in you the fatherless find compassion.’


She has not acknowledged that I was the one who gave her the grain, the new wine and oil, who lavished on her the silver and gold – which they used for Baal.


Ephraim is joined to idols; leave him alone!


They set up kings without my consent; they choose princes without my approval. With their silver and gold they make idols for themselves to their own destruction.


Throw out your calf-idol, Samaria! My anger burns against them. How long will they be incapable of purity?


They are from Israel! This calf – a metalworker has made it; it is not God. It will be broken in pieces, that calf of Samaria.


‘And here you are, a brood of sinners, standing in the place of your fathers and making the Lord even more angry with Israel.


And what was God’s answer to him? ‘I have reserved for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal.’


But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed.


while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.


Then Samuel took a flask of olive oil and poured it on Saul’s head and kissed him, saying, ‘Has not the Lord anointed you ruler over his inheritance?
