Then Jeroboam fortified Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim and lived there. From there he went out and built up Peniel.


‘People listened to me expectantly, waiting in silence for my counsel.


After I had spoken, they spoke no more; my words fell gently on their ears.


Before a downfall the heart is haughty, but humility comes before honour.


Has not my hand made all these things, and so they came into being?’ declares the Lord. ‘These are the ones I look on with favour: those who are humble and contrite in spirit, and who tremble at my word.

But the more they were called, the more they went away from me. They sacrificed to the Baals and they burned incense to images.

She has not acknowledged that I was the one who gave her the grain, the new wine and oil, who lavished on her the silver and gold – which they used for Baal.


They set up kings without my consent; they choose princes without my approval. With their silver and gold they make idols for themselves to their own destruction.


The divisions of the camp of Ephraim went next, under their standard. Elishama son of Ammihud was in command.


These are the names of the men Moses sent to explore the land. (Moses gave Hoshea son of Nun the name Joshua.)

For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.’

The Ephraimite forces were called out, and they crossed over to Zaphon. They said to Jephthah, ‘Why did you go to fight the Ammonites without calling us to go with you? We’re going to burn down your house over your head.’


Now the Ephraimites asked Gideon, ‘Why have you treated us like this? Why didn’t you call us when you went to fight Midian?’ And they challenged him vigorously.


Samuel said, ‘Although you were once small in your own eyes, did you not become the head of the tribes of Israel? The Lord anointed you king over Israel.
