I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.


The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God.’


And who is like your people Israel – the one nation on earth that God went out to redeem as a people for himself, and to make a name for himself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations and their gods from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt?


‘And now, Lord God, keep for ever the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house. Do as you promised,


You made your people Israel your very own for ever, and you, Lord, have become their God.


For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end.


‘The Lord is my strength and my defence; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him.


I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians.


Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defence; he has become my salvation.’


‘At that time,’ declares the Lord, ‘I will be the God of all the families of Israel, and they will be my people.’


‘This is the covenant that I will make with the people of Israel after that time,’ declares the Lord. ‘I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.


They will be my people, and I will be their God.


‘Yet the Israelites will be like the sand on the seashore, which cannot be measured or counted. In the place where it was said to them, “You are not my people”, they will be called “children of the living God”.


This third I will put into the fire; I will refine them like silver and test them like gold. They will call on my name and I will answer them; I will say, “They are my people,” and they will say, “The Lord is our God.” ’


Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God –


And the Lord has declared this day that you are his people, his treasured possession as he promised, and that you are to keep all his commands.


Then Moses and the Levitical priests said to all Israel, ‘Be silent, Israel, and listen! You have now become the people of the Lord your God.


Is this the way you repay the Lord, you foolish and unwise people? Is he not your Father, your Creator, who made you and formed you?


Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
