Then Abishai son of Zeruiah said, ‘Shouldn’t Shimei be put to death for this? He cursed the Lord’s anointed.’


David replied, ‘What does this have to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah? What right do you have to interfere? Should anyone be put to death in Israel today? Don’t I know that today I am king over Israel?’


(Joab and his brother Abishai murdered Abner because he had killed their brother Asahel in the battle of Gibeon.)


Abner was very angry because of what Ish-Bosheth said. So he answered, ‘Am I a dog’s head – on Judah’s side? This very day I am loyal to the house of your father Saul and to his family and friends. I haven’t handed you over to David. Yet now you accuse me of an offence involving this woman!


Mephibosheth bowed down and said, ‘What is your servant, that you should notice a dead dog like me?’


‘Do not blaspheme God or curse the ruler of your people.


When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, ‘Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?’


Paul replied, ‘Brothers, I did not realise that he was the high priest; for it is written: “Do not speak evil about the ruler of your people.”’


Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honour the emperor.


‘Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Who are you pursuing? A dead dog? A flea?
