let seven of his male descendants be given to us to be killed and their bodies exposed before the Lord at Gibeah of Saul – the Lord’s chosen one.’ So the king said, ‘I will give them to you.’


Then the family heads of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests and Levites – everyone whose heart God had moved – prepared to go up and build the house of the Lord in Jerusalem.


Your troops will be willing on your day of battle. Arrayed in holy splendour, your young men will come to you like dew from the morning’s womb.


They go over the pass, and say, ‘We will camp overnight at Geba.’ Ramah trembles; Gibeah of Saul flees.


When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honoured the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed.

Zelah, Haeleph, the Jebusite city (that is, Jerusalem), Gibeah and Kiriath – fourteen towns and their villages. This was the inheritance of Benjamin for its clans.


From their towns they came together at Gibeah to fight against the Israelites.


When the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul and reported these terms to the people, they all wept aloud.


Saul chose three thousand men from Israel; two thousand were with him at Michmash and in the hill country of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan at Gibeah in Benjamin. The rest of the men he sent back to their homes.


Then Samuel left for Ramah, but Saul went up to his home in Gibeah of Saul.
