Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.


Now Jo´ab the son of Zeru-i´ah perceived that the king's heart was toward Ab´salom.


And As´ahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.


He maketh my feet like hinds' feet; and setteth me upon my high places.


As´ahel the brother of Jo´ab was one of the thirty; Elha´nan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem,


Moreover thou knowest also what Jo´ab the son of Zeru-i´ah did to me, and what he did to the two captains of the hosts of Israel, unto Abner the son of Ner, and unto Ama´sa the son of Jether, whom he slew, and shed the blood of war in peace, and put the blood of war upon his girdle that was about his loins, and in his shoes that were on his feet.


Also the valiant men of the armies were, As´ahel the brother of Jo´ab, Elha´nan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem,


And of the Gadites there separated themselves unto David into the hold to the wilderness men of might, and men of war fit for the battle, that could handle shield and buckler, whose faces were like the faces of lions, and were as swift as the roes upon the mountains;


Ezer the first, Obadi´ah the second, Eli´ab the third,


The fourth captain for the fourth month was As´ahel the brother of Jo´ab, and Zebadi´ah his son after him: and in his course were twenty and four thousand.


He maketh my feet like hinds' feet, and setteth me upon my high places.


I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.


Until the day break, and the shadows flee away, turn, my beloved, and be thou like a roe or a young hart upon the mountains of Bether.


Make haste, my beloved, and be thou like to a roe or to a young hart upon the mountains of spices.


Therefore the flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not strengthen his force, neither shall the mighty deliver himself:


The Lord God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds' feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. To the chief singer on my stringed instruments.


Then answered David and said to Ahim´elech the Hittite, and to Ab´ishai the son of Zeru-i´ah, brother to Jo´ab, saying, Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp? And Ab´ishai said, I will go down with thee.
