“Saul and Jonathan, beloved and lovely! In life and in death they were not divided; they were swifter than eagles; they were stronger than lions.


Now Joab the son of Zeruiah knew that the king’s heart went out to Absalom.


And Asahel pursued Abner, and as he went, he turned neither to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.


He made my feet like the feet of a deer and set me secure on the heights.


Asahel the brother of Joab was one of the thirty; Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem,


“Moreover, you also know what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, how he dealt with the two commanders of the armies of Israel, Abner the son of Ner, and Amasa the son of Jether, whom he killed, avenging in time of peace for blood that had been shed in war, and putting the blood of war on the belt around his waist and on the sandals on his feet.


The mighty men were Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem,


From the Gadites there went over to David at the stronghold in the wilderness mighty and experienced warriors, expert with shield and spear, whose faces were like the faces of lions and who were swift as gazelles upon the mountains:

Asahel the brother of Joab was fourth, for the fourth month, and his son Zebadiah after him; in his division were 24,000.

Then David said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Joab’s brother Abishai the son of Zeruiah, “Who will go down with me into the camp to Saul?” And Abishai said, “I will go down with you.”
