The king of Assyria sent his three most important commanders with a large army to King Hezekiah in Jerusalem. Those men left Lachish and went to Jerusalem. They stood near the aqueduct [225] by the Upper Pool. (The Upper Pool is on the road to the Washers’ Field.)


One of the commanders said to them, “Tell Hezekiah this is what the great king, the king of Assyria says:


You sent your messengers to insult the Lord. You said, “I came with my many chariots [238] to the high mountains. I came deep inside Lebanon. I cut down the tallest cedar trees and the best fir trees of Lebanon. I went up to the highest part of Lebanon, up to its lush forest.


The king of Assyria heard a rumor about Tirhakah king of Ethiopia. The rumor said, “Tirhakah has come to fight against you!”


Those officers said bad things against the gods the people of the world worshiped. Those gods are only things people made with their hands. In the same way, those officers said the same bad things against the God of Jerusalem.


The Lord can stop wars\par anywhere on earth.\par He can break the soldiers’ bows,\par shatter their spears.\par and burn their shields. {\cf2\super [283]} \par


“Jerusalem, I am against you.\par You sit on top of the mountain.\par You sit like a queen over this valley.\par You people of Jerusalem say,\par ‘No person can attack us.\par No person can come into our strong city.’\par But listen to this message from the Lord.\par


“Announce this message in Egypt.\par Tell it in the city of Migdol.\par Tell it in Memphis and Tahpanhes.\par ‘Get ready for war.\par Why? Because people all around you\par are being killed with swords.’\par


“Babylon, you are too proud.\par And I am against you.”\par Our Master, the Lord All-Powerful,\par says these things.\par “I am against you,\par and the time has come\par for you to be punished.\par


The Lord says,\par “Babylon, you are a destroying mountain,\par and I am against you.\par Babylon, you destroyed the whole country,\par and I am against you.\par I will put my hand out against you.\par I will roll you off the cliffs.\par I will make you into a burned-up mountain.\par


So now, the Lord my Master really will speak! He says, “You told lies. You saw visions that were not true. So now I (God) am against you!” The Lord my Master said these things.


Say to the land of Israel, ‘The Lord said these things: I am against you! I will pull my sword from its sheath! {\cf2\super [155]} I will remove all people from you—the good people and the evil people!


So the Lord my Master says: “I am against you, Tyre! I will bring many nations to fight against you. They will come again and again, like waves on the beach.”


Say, ‘The Lord my Master says these things:


So, I (God) am against you. I am against the many branches of your Nile River. I will destroy Egypt completely. The cities will be empty from Migdol to Aswan, and as far as the border of Ethiopia.

Tell him that the Lord and Master says these things, ‘Gog, you are the most important leader of the nations of Meshech and Tubal! But I am against you.


“Son of man, {\cf2\super [302]} speak against Gog for me. Tell him that the Lord and Master says these things, ‘Gog, you are the most important leader of the countries Meshech and Tubal! But I am against you.


So the Lord my Master says, “So now, even I am against you! And I will punish you while those other people watch.


The lion (king of Nineveh) killed people\par to feed his cubs and lionesses.\par He filled his cave (Nineveh)\par with men’s bodies.\par He filled his cave\par with women he had killed.\par


It will be very bad\par for that city of murderers.\par \{Nineveh\} is a city full of lies.\par It is filled with things taken\par from other countries.\par It is filled with plenty of people\par that it hunted and killed!\par


But \{Nineveh\}, all your strong places will be like fig trees. New figs become ripe. A person comes and shakes the tree. The figs fall into the mouth of that person. He eats them, and they are gone!


You can do all those things, but the fire will still destroy you completely! And the sword will kill you. Your land will look like a swarm of grasshoppers came and ate everything.


The Lord All-Powerful says,\par “I am against you Nineveh.\par I will pull your dress {\cf2\super [7]} up over your face.\par I will let the nations see your naked body.\par Those kingdoms will see your shame.\par


Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Don’t be afraid of that army. I will allow you to defeat them. By this time tomorrow, you will have killed them all. You will cut the legs of the horses and burn all their chariots.”


Joshua did what the Lord said he would do—Joshua cut the legs of their horses and burned their chariots.
