When Reuben returned to the pit and saw that Joseph wasn’t in the pit, he tore his clothes.

Then David took hold on his clothes and tore them, and all the men who were with him did likewise.


They mourned, wept, and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of YHWH, and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.


On the third day, a man came out of the camp from Saul, with his clothes torn and earth on his head. When he came to David, he fell to the earth and showed respect.

The people came to Bethel and sat there until evening before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept severely.


A man of Benjamin ran out of the army and came to Shiloh the same day, with his clothes torn and with dirt on his head.
