On the third day, a man came out of the camp from Saul, with his clothes torn and earth on his head. When he came to David, he fell to the earth and showed respect.


Jehoshaphat was alarmed, and set himself to seek to YHWH. He proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.


On the twenty-third day of the seventh month, he sent the people away to their tents, joyful and glad of heart for the goodness that YHWH had shown to David, to Solomon, and to Israel his people.


Then I proclaimed a fast there at the river Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek from him a straight way for us, for our little ones, and for all our possessions.


So we fasted and begged our God for this, and he granted our request.


Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly, both men and women, and all who could hear with understanding, on the first day of the seventh month.


“You go and gather together all the Jews who are present in Susa, and y’all fast for me. Y’all must not eat nor drink three days, night or day. I and my maidens will also fast the same way. Then I will go in to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish.”


In every province, wherever the king’s commandment and his decree came, there was great mourning among the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.


When they lifted up their eyes from a distance, and didn’t recognize him, they raised their voices, and wept. They each tore their robes and sprinkled dust on their heads toward the sky.


In that day, the Lord, YHWH Almighty, called to weeping, to mourning, to baldness, and to dressing in sackcloth.


“Yet even now,” says YHWH, “y’all must turn to me with y’all’s whole heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning.”


“You are to speak to the children of Israel, and say, ‘On the fifteenth day of the seventh month is the Feast of Booths for seven days to YHWH.


“‘So on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, after y’all have gathered the fruits of the land, y’all are to celebrate the feast of YHWH for seven days. There will be a solemn rest on the first day and on the eighth day.


Joshua tore his clothes, and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of YHWH until the evening. He and the elders of Israel put dust on their heads.


I will give to my two witnesses to prophesy one thousand two hundred sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.”


Then all the children of Israel and all the people went up, and came to Bethel, and wept, and sat there before YHWH, and fasted that day until evening; then they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before YHWH.


A man of Benjamin ran out of the army and came to Shiloh the same day, with his clothes torn and with dirt on his head.


They gathered together to Mizpah, and drew water, and poured it out before YHWH, and fasted on that day, and said there, “We have sinned against YHWH.” Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpah.
