The king of Assyria carried the Israelites away to Assyria, settled them in Halah, on the Habor, the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes,


The Lord said by his servants the prophets,


Yet he sent prophets among them to bring them back to the Lord; they testified against them, but they would not listen.


“And now, our God, what shall we say after this? For we have forsaken your commandments,


You gave your good spirit to instruct them, and did not withhold your manna from their mouths, and gave them water for their thirst.


“Nevertheless they were disobedient and rebelled against you and cast your law behind their backs and killed your prophets, who had warned them in order to turn them back to you, and they committed great blasphemies.


And you warned them in order to turn them back to your law. Yet they acted presumptuously and did not obey your commandments, but sinned against your ordinances, by the observance of which a person shall live. They turned a stubborn shoulder and stiffened their neck and would not obey.


But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.


For forty years I loathed that generation and said, “They are a people whose hearts go astray, and they do not regard my ways.”


For it is precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little.”


Who gave up Jacob to the spoiler, and Israel to the robbers? Was it not the Lord, against whom we have sinned, in whose ways they would not walk, and whose law they would not obey?


For my name's sake I defer my anger, for the sake of my praise I restrain it for you, so that I may not cut you off.


But they rebelled and grieved his holy spirit; therefore he became their enemy; he himself fought against them.


And though the Lord persistently sent you all his servants the prophets, you have neither listened nor inclined your ears to hear


The Lord could no longer bear the sight of your evil doings, the abominations that you committed; therefore your land became a desolation and a waste and a curse, without inhabitant, as it is to this day.


Yet I persistently sent to you all my servants the prophets, saying, “I beg you not to do this abominable thing that I hate!”


But they did not listen or incline their ear, to turn from their wickedness and make no offerings to other gods.


From the day that your ancestors came out of the land of Egypt until this day, I have persistently sent all my servants the prophets to them, day after day;


The Lord has done what he purposed, he has carried out his threat; as he ordained long ago, he has demolished without pity; he has made the enemy rejoice over you, and exalted the might of your foes.


We have not listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes, and our ancestors, and to all the people of the land.


They made their hearts adamant in order not to hear the law and the words that the Lord of hosts had sent by his spirit through the former prophets. Therefore great wrath came from the Lord of hosts.


Just as, when I called, they would not hear, so, when they called, I would not hear, says the Lord of hosts,


Two men remained in the camp, one named Eldad, and the other named Medad, and the spirit rested on them; they were among those registered, but they had not gone out to the tent, and so they prophesied in the camp.


For about forty years he put up with them in the wilderness.


So they disagreed with each other; and as they were leaving, Paul made one further statement: “The Holy Spirit was right in saying to your ancestors through the prophet Isaiah,


“You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you are forever opposing the Holy Spirit, just as your ancestors used to do.


Or do you despise the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience? Do you not realize that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?

because no prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.


The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance.
