‘Truly I tell you,’ Jesus answered, ‘this very night, before the cock crows, you will disown me three times.’


Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, ‘I don’t know the man!’ Immediately a cock crowed.


‘Truly I tell you,’ Jesus answered, ‘today – yes, tonight – before the cock crows twice you yourself will disown me three times.’


But he replied, ‘Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.’


Then Jesus asked them, ‘When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?’ ‘Nothing,’ they answered.


The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: ‘Before the cock crows today, you will disown me three times.’


Then Jesus answered, ‘Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the cock crows, you will disown me three times!


Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a cock began to crow.
