And when the children of Ammon saw that they stank before David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth–re´hob, and the Syrians of Zobah, twenty thousand footmen, and of king Ma´acah a thousand men, and of Ishtob twelve thousand men.


And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entering in of the gate: and the Syrians of Zobah, and of Rehob, and Ishtob, and Ma´acah, were by themselves in the field.


And David sent and inquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bath–she´ba, the daughter of Eli´am, the wife of Uri´ah the Hittite?


And Ab´salom sent for Ahith´ophel the Gi´lonite, David's counselor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he offered sacrifices. And the conspiracy was strong; for the people increased continually with Ab´salom.


And one told David, saying, Ahith´ophel is among the conspirators with Ab´salom. And David said, O Lord, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahith´ophel into foolishness.


And when Ahith´ophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.


And he went through all the tribes of Israel unto Abel, and to Beth–ma´achah, and all the Berites: and they were gathered together, and went also after him.


Ja´ir the son of Manas´seh took all the country of Argob unto the coasts of Gesh´uri and Ma-ach´athi; and called them after his own name, Ba´shan–hav´oth–ja´ir, unto this day.


Then answered David and said to Ahim´elech the Hittite, and to Ab´ishai the son of Zeru-i´ah, brother to Jo´ab, saying, Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp? And Ab´ishai said, I will go down with thee.
