And when the children of Ammon saw that they stank before David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth–re´hob, and the Syrians of Zobah, twenty thousand footmen, and of king Ma´acah a thousand men, and of Ishtob twelve thousand men.


And when David heard of it, he sent Jo´ab, and all the host of the mighty men.


When Jo´ab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians:


Eliph´elet the son of Ahas´bai, the son of the Ma-ach´athite, Eli´am the son of Ahith´ophel the Gi´lonite,


and he gathered men unto him, and became captain over a band, when David slew them of Zobah: and they went to Damascus, and dwelt therein, and reigned in Damascus.


So they hired thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Ma´achah and his people; who came and pitched before Me´deba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.


And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array before the gate of the city: and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field.


then they came to Gedali´ah to Mizpah, even Ish´ma-el the son of Nethani´ah, and Jo´hanan and Jonathan the sons of Kare´ah, and Serai´ah the son of Tan´humeth, and the sons of E´phai the Netoph´athite, and Jezani´ah the son of a Ma-ach´athite, they and their men.


So they went up, and searched the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, as men come to Hamath.


and Hebron, and Rehob, and Hammon, and Kanah, even unto great Zidon;


Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob:


Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain men to Jephthah, and went out with him.


And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gil´e-ad went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob:
