Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?”


O Lord, the God of Israel, you are just, for we are left a remnant that has escaped, as it is today. Behold, we are before you in our guilt, for none can stand before you because of this.”


Yet you have been righteous in all that has come upon us, for you have dealt faithfully and we have acted wickedly.


The tents of robbers are at peace, and those who provoke God are secure, who bring their god in their hand.


But I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to argue my case with God.


From out of the city the dying groan, and the soul of the wounded cries for help; yet God charges no one with wrong.


He gives them security, and they are supported, and his eyes are upon their ways.


His roots entwine the stone heap; he looks upon a house of stones.


Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful.


Righteous are you, O Lord, and right are your rules.


I know, O Lord, that your rules are righteous, and that in faithfulness you have afflicted me.


The Lord is righteous in all his ways and kind in all his works.


Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers!


I have seen a wicked, ruthless man, spreading himself like a green laurel tree.


Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.


Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.


that though the wicked sprout like grass and all evildoers flourish, they are doomed to destruction forever;


For the simple are killed by their turning away, and the complacency of fools destroys them;


There is a vanity that takes place on earth, that there are righteous people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked, and there are wicked people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity.


Set forth your case, says the Lord; bring your proofs, says the King of Jacob.


You have never heard, you have never known, from of old your ear has not been opened. For I knew that you would surely deal treacherously, and that from before birth you were called a rebel.


But, O Lord of hosts, who judges righteously, who tests the heart and the mind, let me see your vengeance upon them, for to you have I committed my cause.


For even your brothers and the house of your father, even they have dealt treacherously with you; they are in full cry after you; do not believe them, though they speak friendly words to you.”


Surely, as a treacherous wife leaves her husband, so have you been treacherous to me, O house of Israel, declares the Lord.’”


And I thought, ‘After she has done all this she will return to me,’ but she did not return, and her treacherous sister Judah saw it.


“After I had given the deed of purchase to Baruch the son of Neriah, I prayed to the Lord, saying:


For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have been utterly treacherous to me, declares the Lord.


Oh that I had in the desert a travelers’ lodging place, that I might leave my people and go away from them! For they are all adulterers, a company of treacherous men.


“The Lord is in the right, for I have rebelled against his word; but hear, all you peoples, and see my suffering; my young women and my young men have gone into captivity.


“Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear now, O house of Israel: Is my way not just? Is it not your ways that are not just?


Therefore the Lord has kept ready the calamity and has brought it upon us, for the Lord our God is righteous in all the works that he has done, and we have not obeyed his voice.


To you, O Lord, belongs righteousness, but to us open shame, as at this day, to the men of Judah, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to all Israel, those who are near and those who are far away, in all the lands to which you have driven them, because of the treachery that they have committed against you.


But like Adam they transgressed the covenant; there they dealt faithlessly with me.


So the law is paralyzed, and justice never goes forth. For the wicked surround the righteous; so justice goes forth perverted.


The Lord within her is righteous; he does no injustice; every morning he shows forth his justice; each dawn he does not fail; but the unjust knows no shame.


You have wearied the Lord with your words. But you say, “How have we wearied him?” By saying, “Everyone who does evil is good in the sight of the Lord, and he delights in them.” Or by asking, “Where is the God of justice?”


And now we call the arrogant blessed. Evildoers not only prosper but they put God to the test and they escape.’”


“The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he.
