They were hungry,\par so you gave them food from heaven.\par They were thirsty,\par so you gave them water from a rock.\par And you told them,\par ‘Come, take this land.’\par You used your power,\par and took the land for them!\par


You gave them your good Spirit\par to make them wise.\par You gave them manna for food.\par You gave them water for their thirst.\par


The people asked for food,\par and God brought them quail.\par God gave them plenty of bread from heaven.\par


The people began calling the special food “manna. [109] ” The manna was like small white coriander seeds, and it tasted like thin cakes made with honey.


Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will cause food to fall from the sky. This food will be for you to eat. Every day the people should go out and gather the food they need that day. I will do this to see if the people will do what I tell them.


“Come, eat the food of my wisdom. And drink the wine that I have made.


They began complaining against God and Moses. The people said, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt? We will die here in the desert! There is no bread! There is no water! And we hate this terrible food!”


All the people that don’t know God try to get those things. Your Father (God) knows that you need those things.


Your ancestors {\cf2\super [93]} ate the manna (food) God gave them in the desert. But it didn’t keep them from dying.


I am not like the bread that our ancestors {\cf2\super [95]} ate \{in the desert\}. They ate that bread. But, \{like all people\}, they died. I am the bread that came down from heaven. The person that eats this bread will live forever.”


They all ate the same spiritual food.


In the desert, the Lord fed you manna [53] —something your ancestors [54] had never seen. The Lord tested you. Why? Because the Lord made you humble so that things would go well for you in the end.


The Lord humbled you and let you be hungry. Then he fed you with manna [49] —something you did not know about before. It was something your ancestors [50] had never seen. Why did the Lord do these things? Because he wanted you to know that it is not just bread that keeps people alive. People’s lives depend on what the Lord says.


In the Most Holy Place was a golden altar {\cf2\super [94]} for burning incense. {\cf2\super [95]} And also there was the Holy Box of the Agreement. {\cf2\super [96]} The box was covered with gold. Inside this box was a golden jar of manna {\cf2\super [97]} and Aaron’s rod (stick)—the rod that once grew leaves. Also in the box were the flat rocks \{with the Ten Commandments\} of the old agreement \{written on them\}.


The next morning, the special food from heaven stopped coming. This happened the day after the people ate the food that grew in the land of Canaan. From that time on, the people of Israel did not get the special food from heaven.
