You will, on your own, relinquish your inheritance that I gave you. I will make you serve your enemies in a land you do not know, for you have set my anger on fire; it will burn for ever.


I will not punish your daughters when they act promiscuously or your daughters-in-law when they commit adultery, for the men themselves go off with prostitutes and make sacrifices with cult prostitutes. People without discernment are doomed.


I discovered Israel like grapes in the wilderness. I saw your ancestors like the first fruit of the fig tree in its first season. But they went to Baal-peor, consecrated themselves to Shame,  , and became abhorrent, like the thing they loved.


So Moses told Israel’s judges, ‘Kill each of the men who aligned themselves with Baal of Peor.’


‘Yet they are the ones who, at Balaam’s advice, incited the Israelites to unfaithfulness against the Lord in the Peor incident, so that the plague came against the Lord’s community.


Wasn’t the iniquity of Peor,  which brought a plague on the Lord’s community, enough for us? We have not cleansed ourselves from it even to this day,


The Israelites did what was evil in the Lord’s sight.  They worshipped the Baals


for they abandoned him and worshipped Baal and the Ashtoreths.


The Lord’s anger burned against Israel, and he handed them over to marauders who raided them. He sold  them to the enemies around them, and they could no longer resist their enemies.
